Digital movie workflow for "Zodiac"
data tape archive
The first task of datalab was to create an archive of the dpx files. These files are the digital negative of the movie. Two redundant lto3 copies were created from each d.dmag. These lto3s were then read back in their entirety and a bit-by-bit verfication was executed. The d.mag drives were returned to production only after 100% verfiication occured. This meticulous procedure ensured that datalab, llc never lost or destroyed any of the over 18 million frames.

When image files enter datalab they are checked for consistency in terms of metadata and content. A reporting system notifies the operators of any potential problems and allows them to be remedied. After the dpx files had passed this 'data membrane' they are in a state that the tools and applications downstream can rely upon.
