Digital movie workflow
system approach
Historically, the movie-making process has been divided into sub-categories:

photography --> dailies --> offline editorial --> negative conform/online --> vfx --> color correction --> mastering.

Datalab offers a holistic approach to the process. A complete system for managing all data and metadata that offers a more reliable and controllable environment for the creative process of making a movie.

The system is greater than the sum of it's parts.

The editorial environment has always managed large amounts of data (picture, sound, and metadata in its various forms.) By necessity, this has historically been done by using proxies and by managing and coordinating the efforts of outside vendors.

Datalab consolidates this data flow within the editorial process again.

Datalab is a system.
Individual implementation can vary, but the concept stays the same.
For example, Datalab handled the digital negative of Zodiac by using dpx files. It is entirely possible to replace this file format with OpenEXR if a production desires. Likewise Avid or Final Cut Pro, HD, 2K or 4K.
Datalab modules are adaptable, but the general workflow and system tools remain the same.
