During Zodiac the actual files were created on set. A common way of shooting digitally right now is to use a HDCAM/SR deck to record the camera output. Datalab is equally viable in this scenario: the HDCAM tapes get converted into DPX files. All the advantages of a file based workflow can be maintained from there on. The advantage is that it is much cheaper to handle files during edit and online than to continuously utilize expensive vtr equipment.
